Off-grid travel with Projecta 12V Semi-Flexible Solar Panels
It’s important to have a good solar power setup for off-grid adventures, and these flexible solar panels are a great addition to any setup.
Australia is filled with beautiful places to explore, and some of the best destinations take you to remote locations away from mains power, meaning having a reliable power setup — including solar panels — is a must
Projecta is one of Australia’s most trusted power solution companies and manufactures a wide range of battery and power management products suitable for recreational vehicle (RV) installation. If you wander around a dealership or caravan and RV show you won’t have to look far before you see some of Projecta’s tried-and-true products fitted.
As part of its large range Projecta has a good selection of solar products for RV owners to add to their off-grid setup, ranging from soft folding panels and solar blankets (ideal for around camp and heading on hikes) through to traditional fixed panels.
(To find out more about the benefits of solar blankets, check out this feature.)
But one of Projecta’s newest products for the RV market is the 12V Semi-Flexible Solar Panels. Designed for permanent mounting, these panels are an easy solution for outdoor adventurers who want to add or expand their solar power capacity but don’t have a flat space available on their RV or vehicle for a traditional panel.
There are two models available:
- The 12V 100W (SPF100-MC4) is ideal for supplying power to small–medium appliances.
- The 12V 180W (SPF180-MC4) is designed to charge battery banks that support multiple or large appliances (such as air conditioners and kitchen accessories).
Projecta has designed both models to be compact in size to ensure owners are not overly restricted as to where they can fit them on their RV setup. The 100W panel is 1035mm x 520mm x 3mm and the 180W panel is 1520mm x 680mm x 3mm.
Despite the mere 3mm thickness, each lightweight panel is built using high-efficiency monocrystalline solar cells. This build method ensures that the panels are efficient and have a strong output when converting sunlight to power.
Designed for curved surfaces
But one of the most unique features of these solar panels is the fact that they are semi-flexible. Unlike traditional panels, these two models feature a 400mm maximum bending radius which provides users with a much wider choice of where to mount them on their RV or vehicle. Motorhome, caravan and camper trailer roofs are often already cluttered with other appliances or features, leaving few areas that are completely flat. So having a panel that can mould to the slight contour of your motorhome, camper, van, 4WD or even your boat opens up a world of solar-powered opportunities.
How to install the panels
The panels are simple and easy to install. Each panel has a durable adhesive backing and pre-fitted MC4 type connectors, providing secure and permanent installation. Their lightweight construction also makes them easy to carry and set in the desired space and should not impact the weight limits of your RV setup.
If installed correctly according to the instructions, the panels shouldn’t shift for at least 20 years.
Enhance your off-grid camping setup
The Semi-Flexible Solar Panels are designed to pair with Projecta’s other solar and power management products (such as solar controllers, DC chargers and lithium batteries) to create a fully integrated system ideal for those who love exploring Australia's best off-grid campsites.
The panels are available for purchase from leading outdoor adventure, camping and 4WD outlets around Australia.
- The 12V 100W (SPF100-MC4): RRP $770
- The 12V 180W (SPF180-MC4): $1144
