Motorhomes at the Queensland Caravan and Camping Supershow

Whilst I am writing this, I’m also taking some time out at the Queensland Caravan and Camping Show. Editor Ford brings you a full report on Caravan World

but I’ll just concentrate on a couple of motorhomes that I looked at. One was a new model from Sydney-based Emu RV, the E4S. Based on Fiat Ducato vans, the motorhomes are built by Nova Caravans to an Emu RV design. Unlike the other Emu RV models, the E4S, as suggested by the name to be a four-seater, only sleeps two. At the show was the prototype but it’s looking good.

Also based on a Fiat Ducato van is another prototype, Windsor’s Otway motorhome. It was introduced partly because Apollo (owner of the Windsor brand) was having trouble sourcing the Adria Twin 400, a motorhome it imports from Slovenia. The Otway has a similar layout, a four-seater with a mid-kitchen and rear east-west bed. Like the Adria Twin 600, the Otway doesn’t have any opening windows in the rear area, something that I’m not convinced works too well in hot Aussie summers if the air conditioner isn’t in use. Another point of interest was the Otway was based on the Ducato Series 8, the latest model to hit our shores. I’ve only seen them but am yet to have a drive.

Large van conversions certainly seem to be a growing segment of the market at the moment, and for good reason too. Horizon Motorhomes has long been an established manufacturer but others like Red Centre, Jayco’s Ducato pop-top and Volkswagen’s Crafter Kampervan (fitted out by Jayco) all made their debut at the earlier Sydney show. Interesting times. The biggest problem, as with many items today, is the supply of base vehicles!
