Australian Outback Wildflower Season 2022
Australia’s Golden Outback is set to enter its wildflower season early this year, with steady autumn rains promoting the growth of over 400 wreath plants in WA’s Gascoyne Murchison region. Local experts are predicting that the wildflower season, which usually runs between July and October, will be spectacular this year because of ideal weather conditions.
Chairman of Morowa Visitors Centre, Paul Offszanka, reported that there have already been sightings of orchids and everlastings. “Wreath plants have been sighted for several months now and are starting to show a few petals as well as bush like Wattle, Hakea, Grevillea, Thryptomene, Hibbertia, and Dampiera.”
Meanwhile in Murchison, Frances Pollock of Wooleen Station has noticed the growth of several different varieties. “They will continue to improve but we’re seeing patches of Everlastings, Bachelor Buttons, Brachycomes, and Mulla Mulla flowering now. Plus the Acacias have been flowering on and off since the big rain in March,” she said.
While the breathtaking views can be enjoyed in the beauty of nature, the region also hosts three wildflower shows. The Ravensthorpe Wildflower Show is the world’s largest show of its kind. Now in its 40th year, the show will be held from 12 to 24 September and will feature more than 700 wildflowers.
The Esperance Wildflower Show runs from 20 to 24 September, while the Reynoldson Reserve Wildflower Festival will be held at Wongan Hills on the 28 and 29 October.
The Golden Outback is the most diverse wildflower region in the world. An estimated 12,000 different varieties bloom each year, putting on a remarkable show for the region’s visitors. The Golden Outback has compiled wildflower trail itineraries, which are available on the organisation’s website.
