How to: Road Trip With Your Dog
Dogs Australia has released a list of important tips to consider when travelling with dogs.
Dogs Australia President, Hugh Gent, has urged travellers to plan ahead before taking a dog-friendly road trip.
“There are four considerations when travelling and holidaying with your dogs: comfort, safety, health and happiness,” he said. “It’s crucial to plan ahead – for the travel itself and for the holiday destination. When your dog is happy and healthy, they cope better with travel and you’ll all have a great time.”
Pet owners are encouraged to exercise their dogs before the trip to burn off any excess energy. Booking pet-friendly accommodation ahead of time is essential, as is carrying enough food and water for the trip. Dogs should be microchipped and all registered details should be current.
It is important to ensure the dog has a dedicated, comfortable space in the car that is big enough for them to turn around in and lie down. Securing dogs in the car is a vital safety consideration that is also enshrined in law. If your road trip is a long one, Dogs Australia urges pet owners to stop every two to three hours so that dogs can drink and relieve themselves.
Once you arrive at your destination, it is a good idea to take your dog to the beach or a park so they can exert some energy and enjoy the mental stimulation. Finally, Dogs Australia advises that owners familiarise their dogs with the holiday property so that they feel at ease with the boundaries and layout. It’s also essential to check any fences or barriers to ensure there are no potential escape gaps.
