Your 2022 RV Buying Checklist
Thinking of doing your big lap? Maybe getting out amongst the gumtrees and bush this summer? Or your old caravan is getting too hot when the sun hits? Whatever your reason, upgrading to a recreational vehicle (RV) or motorhome is perfect for exploring the great outdoors. We’ve put together a comprehensive checklist, so you know exactly what to do when buying your next RV.
How will I use it?
This is the biggest question you need to ask yourself before you start looking – is it for the annual family holiday? Bush adventures for months on end? In caravan parks or out the back of Bourke? Do I want to rough it or do I want creature comforts? This will inform what kind of RV or motorhome will be best.
Can I tow it?
You need to narrow down your options in terms of what you can tow with your current vehicle – if you’re not willing to upgrade your car to comfortably tow your new RV, you’ll have to put it in the ‘No’ pile.
What do I actually need?
Some motorhomes come with almost every comfort from home, including showers, stoves, and even washing machines. But does the convenience of a washing machine justify the higher price tag?
Can I hire before I buy?
This is one bit of the checklist you shouldn’t ignore – if you can try an RV or motorhome before you commit to buying, do it. This will give you a feel for how it handles on the road, whether it ticks all your boxes in terms of comfort and useability, and if it feels like something you’d use on a regular basis. Some larger motorhomes may need a Medium Rigid licence – so factor that into your decision too.
Should I buy new or used?
Buying a used RV or motorhome is cheaper upfront but may end up costing you more in the long term. Getting roadworthy certificates, repairs, maintenance, and higher fuel consumption – or even the prospect of replacing it sooner rather than later – can be more trouble than it’s worth. Buying new ensures you get a new RV warranty, better safety features, and lenders will be more inclined to pass on savings in terms of lower interest rates as they will be reluctant to finance a “clunker.”
How should I approach finance?
You should always shop around for finance when you look at personal loans. Don’t just settle for whatever your bank offers (if they offer anything) but shop around. Finding a reliable and highly rated broker can help you with your finance, as they can find many different packages from a variety of lenders instead of just one. Getting pre-approval can also help you negotiate better prices – more on that below.
Should I buy at a dealer? At a show?
Buying at dealers may be a bit more time consuming compared to RV shows, but both are good options. You can take your time at shows and come back the next day once you’ve had a think about it. Either way, getting your loan pre-approval is recommended, as it gives you a hard price ceiling a dealer has to match if they’re going to make a sale. Approaching dealers at the end of a month or financial year can also be a good prospect – because they’ll be fishing for a sale more often than not.
